Celebrating The Year Of The Dragon

chinese new year celebrations at the porterbrook

At the Porterbrook Care Home, we love celebrating different cultures and experiencing the world through exciting activities and food. This February, we have been celebrating Chinese New Year - The Year Of The Dragon, in an action-packed day of fun for all.

From reading each other's horoscopes together, where everyone was intrigued to find out which animal they were, to fortune cookies which created a few giggles across the home and is a staple among Chinese culture.

Residents and staff came together to watch the Chinese New Year Carnival live in Hong Kong and Shanghai. Our residents enjoyed the bright colours of the carnival which was something new and different to watch.

And it wouldn’t be a Chinese-themed day without a Chinese meal. Our residents tucked into sweet and sour chicken, katsu curry, stir fry veggie noodles, served with egg fried rice and duck and vegetable spring rolls with some honeycomb ice cream for dessert. After a morning of Chinese activities, it was lovely to come together to share a Chinese meal and a glass of wine or drink of choice.

Sharing a Chinese meal brought back so many memories of having a Chinese takeaway in years gone by and sparked conversation and reminiscence.

Each month the Porterbrook selects a country to experience in the home, and it made sense to tie this month in with the Year Of The Dragon. This is just part of the fun we get up to in our varied activities programme. Interested in how we can support your loved ones? Contact our team of care experts today!
