We are thrilled to announce that The Porterbrook Care Home successfully completed the 28 Mile Challenge for the Month of February by walking a total of 30.9 miles and raising £410 for the Charity Alzheimer's UK.

It all started on the last day of January when the yellow walking track was painted onto The Porterbrook's carpark, ready for residents, staff and friends to start their walking journey on February 1st.

On February 1st, bunting was successfully put up (despite the challenges of the wind) to kick off the challenge which started that afternoon.

The 28 Mile Challenge was officially opened by "Boris Johnson". A staff member dressed up with a blonde wig and a mask to cut the red ribbon along with our resident's relative.

1 mile was achieved on the first day of the challenge, and the deserving participants enjoyed a slice a delicious chocolate cake made by our in-house chef. The walkers were ready to do it all over again the next day.

The goal was to walk at least a mile every day in February, however some days were weather permitting! February 4th meant the walking had to be postponed that day, but nevertheless, walking was to commence at the weekend and staff, residents and family had collectively reached 10 miles just in the first few days.

BBC Radio Sheffield were intrigued by what The Porterbrook were getting up to so they visited the home and interviewed staff and residents about the 28 Mile Challenge for Alzheimer's UK on February 17th.

The Porterbrook hit their 28 mile target on February 25th, but were determined to keep going until the month was officially over, and where the celebration party would be in full swing.

The walking had finally come to an end on February 28th by crossing the finish line to mark the end of the challenge. Staff, residents and loved ones walked a total of 30.9 miles and raised £410 for Alzheimer's UK. We have been extremely pleased with everyone's hard work and dedication in reaching this goal.

We thought it was only appropriate to celebrate the occasion by throwing a Wizard of Oz themed party.

Staff made a great effort by dressing up as characters from the Wizard of Oz, while residents gathered to enjoy a variation of party food, from rainbow cupcakes to cheese, grapes and crackers and much more.

The home was beautifully decorated for the party featuring a stunning balloon arch and a bubble machine. To top it all of, a professional singer came to visit The Porterbrook who entertained residents and staff as they sang and danced the afternoon away.

A big thank you to all who participated in the challenge. For look forward to doing more charity events in the future at The Porterbrook.
